Thomas Street Health Center
Thomas Street Health Center is one of the largest HIV clinics in the U.S. and was the first free-standing HIV clinic in the country. It is jointly staffed by physicians from Baylor College of Medicine and UT Health McGovern Medical School. Thomas Street is the focal point for Harris Health System’s HIV programs including its testing, prevention and treatment programs. It opened in 1989 and occupies a 4-story building in the near North part of Houston dedicated to the comprehensive care of HIV patients including primary HIV care, psychiatry, gynecology, endocrinology, hepatitis C, anal dysplasia clinic, adolescent clinic, rheumatology, and dermatology. On-site services include case management, social services, phlebotomy, radiography, nutrition services, and a pharmacy.
Thomas Street treats nearly a third of all HIV+ patients in care in Harris County. In 2020, about 6000 adult patients with HIV received a full range of primary care, specialty, and supporting services at Thomas Street or its satellite operation at Northwest Clinic. Baylor and UTHealth physicians jointly staff Thomas Street, giving it a rich research, education and collaborative culture. More than 85% of the patients have successful HIV suppression. Thomas Street also operates an HIV Prevention Program that prescribes HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and offers free walk-up rapid testing for HIV.
Thomas Street has extensive experience conducting research with people with HIV and persons at high risk for HIV infection. An on-site investigational drug pharmacy service supports research studies of investigational agents.
Thomas Street is an active site for studies conducted by the Houston AIDS Research Team (HART) including AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) protocols; multiple independent NIH-funded research projects; CDC projects, HRSA projects, and industry-sponsored clinical trials.
