Ask the Expert: Fad Diets

With New Year's around the corner, like every year many will resolve to lose weight. And we all know, when it comes to weight loss, there is no shortage of advice. 

Dr. Ann Smith Barnes, medical director, Harris Health System's Weight Management Services and Disease Prevention, offers tips as you start your weight loss journey.

With regard to fad diets, which often restrict certain foods, while they are initially effective in helping lose weight, they are not sustainable over time, according to Dr. Barnes.

Instead, Dr. Barnes suggests an eating plan that includes most food groups and needed nutrients, eating a balanced diet -- more fruits and vegetables -- and reducing portion sizes.
