Interested in joining the ranks of our Harris Health System volunteers? Before you apply to become a volunteer, we ask that you review the following information to familiarize yourself with the application process.
• Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age.
• Volunteers are encouraged to commit to at least six months of service in their assignment. Some volunteer positions require additional time commitments and training because of the nature of the assignment. Your volunteer coordinator will have more information on these assignments.
• All volunteers are required to provide a copy of their current vaccination records indicating immunization against the following diseases: measels, mumps and reubella (MMR); varicella (chicken pox); and pertussis. Volunteers are also required to have an annual tuberculosis (TB) test and influenza (flu) vaccination. TB tests and flu shots can be obtained in our Employee Health Clinic, and are free of charge.
• All adult volunteers are required to pass a criminal background check, which is conducted through Volunteer & Guest Services, free of charge.
Step 1: Fill out the appropriate application and submit it to the Volunteer & Guest Services Department. Contact Aurora Miller at 713-873-2227 with any questions or email us at email@example.com. Please note that applications will not be considered complete without required vaccination records.
Step 2: After we review your application, including required vaccinations records, we will run your background check. Once approved, you will be contacted to schedule a brief interview, which can be done over the telephone or in our offices.
Step 3: A volunteer coordinator at the facility at which you are interested in volunteering will review available volunteer positions with you to determine your area of interest.
Step 4: After all the above steps are completed, you will be invited to a volunteer orientation. We will provide you with information about Harris Health, the Volunteer & Guest Services Department, review of the history and mission of Harris Health, go over policies on confidentiality, fire and safety, infection prevention and other important topics.
Step 5: Work with Volunteer & Guest Services staff to determine if there are any additional follow-up steps needed before scheduling a time to be issued a volunteer ID badge.
Please Note: Your volunteer training will depend on where you are placed. Some departments require new volunteers to shadow a seasoned volunteer or staff member in order to learn necessary skills.
