Areas of Greatest Need
Hospitality Floor Hosts/Family Care Hosts - Volunteer floor hosts brighten the day of patients, visitors and staff. Strategically placed throughout the hospital, these volunteer and guest services representatives provide information, assist customers with access to hospital district resources and services, assist in minor problem resolution and serve a vital role in ensuring overall patient and customer satisfaction. Family care hosts serve in the waiting areas of the Neurological Intensive Care Unit, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Day Surgery and Surgical Intensive Care Unit, assisting families of patients with various needs.
Hospitality Desk/Concierge Services - Staff members and volunteers at the Ben Taub and Lyndon B. Johnson hospitals' hospitality desks answer in-coming calls and assist patients and visitors with directions and patient information. While there is always an employee at the desk, additional volunteer support is needed. Being bilingual is a plus for this volunteer placement.
Guest Transportation - Volunteers are needed to assist with in-hospital patient transportation. You must be at least 18 years of age. You will be given a brief training session regarding proper techniques and wheelchair information. Volunteers also assist with loaning wheelchairs to patients visiting our facilities.
Volunteer Interpreters - Because many of our patients do not speak English, volunteer interpreters are in high demand to assist patients and medical staff in communicating with each other. Potential volunteer interpreters are given an interpretation test to qualify.
Pet Therapy - We have an exciting Animal Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Activity Program. For more information, please visit our Pet Therapy page.

Special Project/Special Event Volunteers - What Is a Special Project Volunteer? These volunteers work almost entirely behind the scenes and their efforts are invaluable. They sew, knit, shop for, organize and distribute patient amenities for every HCHD facility. Their gift of time, talent and treasure makes a huge difference in the lives of thousands of patients each year.
We are always looking for additional volunteers to help us meet the tangible needs of our patients. So if you, or someone you know, have special skills (such as sewing, knitting, crafting, shopping), a little extra time, and a giving heart … we’d love for you to join us!
Special Project activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Knitting, crocheting and/or sewing hats, blankets and other patient amenities
- Coordinating toiletry/magazine/book drives
- Helping to facilitate holiday events
- Providing pleasant diversions in the form of craft activities for hospitalized patients
We also have need for volunteers to assist with special events throughout the year. Some include:
- World AIDS Day, December 1
- Quarterly Blood Drives
- Health Fairs
- Project Holiday Cheer
- Done-in-a-Day Activities
No matter what your area of interest, get involved today! Become part of the thriving volunteer community at HCHD.
