Bereavement Leave Policy

Purpose: To support employees in addressing personal and family needs during a time of loss.
  1. Eligibility:
    • Regular, full-time employees are eligible for bereavement leave. 
    • Up to 5 days (40 hours) of paid leave for the death of immediate family members, including:
          1. Mother/Stepmother
          2. Father/Stepfather
          3. Legal guardian
          4. Brother/Stepbrother
          5. Sister/Stepsister
          6. Spouse/Domestic Partner
          7. Son/Stepson
          8. Daughter/Stepdaughter
    • Up to 3 days (24 hours) of paid leave for other family members including:
      • Mother-in-law
      • Father-in-law
      • Daughter-in-law
      • Son-in-law
      • Brother-in-law
      • Sister-in-law
      • Grandparent/Step-grandparent/Grandparent-in-law
      • Grandchildren/Step-grandchildren
      • Great-grandparents/Step-Great-grandparents/Great-grandparents-in-law
    • Employees may use bereavement leave for the death of a family member who is regarded by the employee as one of the covered family members listed above.
    • Employees (birthing and non-birthing parents) may use bereavement leave for miscarriages prior to 20 weeks' gestation (employee birthing parent or spouse/domestic partner). Stillbirths (beyond 20 weeks' gestation) are covered under the Paid Birthing and Bonding Benefits Policy 6.52.
    • Employees may request Paid Time Off (PTO) if more than 24 hours of bereavement leave is desired. If the employee has no PTO available, the employee may request leave without pay. Approval of PTO is at the discretion of the employee's time-card approval supervisor/manager.
    • Employees may request PTO for the death of other family members not listed above. Approval of PTO is at the discretion of the employee's time-card approval supervisor/manager.
    • Employees shall follow the department call-in procedure for use of bereavement leave.
