Military Leave Policy

Purpose: To define the leave of absence benefits provided to Harris Health System employees who perform military service.
  1. Policy Statement: Harris Health ensures employment and re-employment benefits for employees engaged in military service. These employees are entitled to rights and benefits under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and Chapter 437 of the Texas Government Code. 
  2. Definitions:
    • Employee: Refers to Harris Health employees intending to or currently perform military service. 
    • Military Leave: A period of absence from employment to perform military service.  
    • Military Service: Includes voluntary or involuntary duties in a uniformed service, such as active duty, training, National Guard duty, fitness examinations, and funeral honors duty. 
    • Paid Military Leave: Employees are entitled to up to 15 paid workdays per Texas fiscal year if they are members of the Texas military forces, reserve components of the armed forces, or authorized urban search and rescue teams. 
  3. Compliance: The policy adheres to federal and state laws, ensuring employees receive their entitled rights and benefits during military service.
