Dr. Larry Butcher

What made you want to become a doctor, and how long have you been practicing medicine?
I wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember. As a child, whenever I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said a doctor. Ive always been fascinated by medicine. Id watch all the medical shows on television. I think my love for medicine has something to do with my frequent exposure to doctors and hospitals while growing up, due to family illnesses.

I have been practicing medicine for 32 years.

What type of services do you perform at your health center?
I am a family physician, so I see patients of all ages. I also perform various procedures including minor surgical procedures, such as ingrown toenail excision, removal of skin lesions, gynecologic and contraception procedures, such as IUD and Nexplanon insertion, and joint injections and other procedures.

What is unique to your clinic that others may not know about?
We are one of three sites for the Family Medicine Residency Program at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. This is a three-year program that trains residents to become family physicians. We have 15 residents at Acres Home, five residents from each year of training. There are a total of 36 residents in our program.

What is your philosophy or overall goal when meeting with patients?
I believe the patients role in their own health is of utmost importance. I assist them by diagnosing, educating and encouraging, but the patient has to actually carry out the treatment plan. Therefore, the doctor and patient should work as a team to maintain or improve the patients health status.

What should a person expect when they become a patient at your clinic?
When a person becomes a patient at Acres Home, they should know they are being cared for by board-certified physicians, who are faculty at McGovern Medical School.  They should know that they are receiving care that is following the latest clinical guidelines.

Why do you like practicing medicine at Harris Health System?
I like practicing medicine at Harris Health because I am helping bring care to a part of our city that has a shortage of physicians. Our patients seem so appreciative of the care they receive. This makes me feel I am doing something worthwhile.
