Junior Volunteer Program

Thank you for your interest in Harris Health System's 2024 Summer Junior Volunteer Program. To provide the best possible experience for junior volunteers, patients and staff, we will only be able to accommodate approximately 100 new and returning junior volunteers. While we welcome applications through Friday, March 1, please understand that not everyone who applies can be accepted into the program.

Program Mission:
The mission of the Summer Junior Volunteer Program is to build vital partnerships with students who are interested in making a difference in the lives of others. Students are provided with an opportunity to explore the healthcare field while enriching the lives of our patients and giving back to the community.

Through the Summer Junior Volunteer Program, high school students are able to learn about healthcare professions while providing valuable assistance in key areas through the Harris Health. Volunteering can be a very rewarding and fulfilling experience that will stay with you throughout your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q) May I get an exemption from a medical documentation requirement?
A) In most cases – no. You may speak with the staff at the Occupational Health Clinic to ask specific clinical questions. Make sure to let them know that you are asking about a volunteer under the age of 18, if applicable. They are open, Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Call 713-873-3470, option 5.

Q) I want to volunteer at a specific clinic location, am I allowed?
A) Yes, we will do our best to place you at the Harris Health facility of your choice. We will discuss location selection during the interview process. When you fill out the online application, you can add location requests to the short answer question asking “Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?”

Q) I want to volunteer, but I’m graduating and already 18 years old. Can I still volunteer?
A) You now qualify for our regular, adult volunteer program! We would love to have you back as an adult volunteer. Just submit a Return Adult application from your VSys Volunteer Portal.

Q) I have another question that is not answered here.
A) Go ahead and submit your online application to indicate your interest in the program. There will be opportunities at the interview stage to ask every question and address every concern. The application is not a commitment to participate!

Q) Is every applicant accepted? Will there be a waitlist?
A) We do expect this program to fill completely. Please apply as soon as possible for the best chance of reserving a spot in this popular program. If we exceed the number of volunteer applicants we can safely and securely place in our facilities, we will place subsequent applicants in a “waitpool”, pending an opening. Applicants will be accepted into the program on a case by case basis, involving careful review of applications and an interview process.
