Harris Health System has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), joining an elite group of imaging facilities in Texas.
“This distinction is not given, it’s earned,” says Tammy F. Owens, RN, manager, Breast Imaging and Radiology, Harris Health’s Ambulatory Care Services. “The entire team has worked diligently to receive this designation, which highlights the strength and tireless commitment of our physicians and team members.
“We are committed to excellence and are passionate about giving our patients the highest quality of care. We have an outstanding team and we are proud to be among an elite group of breast imaging centers.”
The accreditation is considered the gold standard in the industry for image quality and safety. By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy) and breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) including MRI-guided biopsy.
Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, determined that Harris Health has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
“Achieving this recognition affirms the commitment and tremendous effort put forth by our staff every day to provide the highest quality of care,” says Dr. Lilian Ebuoma, medical director, Breast Imaging, Smith Clinic, and assistant professor, Radiology, Baylor College of Medicine. “The patients we serve should rest assured that the breast care provided and facilities at Smith Clinic are of the highest standards and on par with other elite breast imaging centers in the region and across the nation.”
There are approximately 400 accredited mammography facilities in Texas, and only 75—Harris Health among them—have been named a breast center of excellence.
Annually, Smith Clinic staff provides about 15,000 breast-related procedures for mammography, stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound and MRI. Smith Clinic serves as Harris Health’s primary site for diagnostic and treatment of breast cancer patients.
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging, radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
