At Harris Health System, we want to make it easier for people experiencing homelessness to access healthcare services.
Our Healthcare for the Homeless Program, through shelter-based clinics and mobile units, provides primary medical care, dental care, mental health and substance use services, and a variety of support services to persons experiencing homelessness. The program also provides eligibility and registration services through the shelter-based clinics and in other homeless service locations in greater Houston.
The Healthcare for the Homeless Program:
- Reduces or eliminates barriers to healthcare experienced by homeless individuals
- Enables healthcare problems to be detected and treated early
- Decreases emergency center use for primary care needs
- Increases immunization rates of homeless children
- Increases tuberculosis screening and follow-up
- Increases health promotion and prevention education among homeless individual
Open access locations: Services are open to all people experiencing homelessness, regardless of their shelter status, based on appointment, and then, those on a first come, first serve basis. Virtual visits are also available at all locations.
